Students usually begin this level having mastered much of single-syllable phonics and most high-frequency irregular sight words. With reading levels between first and third grade, these students have difficulty reading polysyllabic words. By the end, they will be able to read polysyllabic words with accuracy and increasing fluency. By the end of challenge level, they will be reading more difficult trade books.
