The program is made up of high-quality trade books
The books include:
- Novels written from a range of cultural perspectives
- Short stories
- Biographies
- Other nonfiction
The books themselves:
- Are well written and engrossing
- Appeal to young people’s interests
- Bring alive the core values on which a humane democracy depends
- Broaden cultural horizons and sensitivities
Each is accompanied by a Leader's Guide
Each guide provides:
- Suggestions for activities to introduce the books to young people
- Ways to acquaint young readers with the new words or background information they need to understand the story
- Open-ended questions to stimulate discussion about the book
- Activities that help young people extend thinking about the ideas in the book
- Activities that help young people build connections with each other
These books and guides are organized into packages by grade level
Books focus on:
- Situations that are developmentally appropriate for students of that age
- Concerns that are relevant to students of that age.
The complete K–8 program, including 180 trade books with 180 Leader’s Guides, comprises three packages:
AfterSchool KidzLit® Grades K–3 Package
AfterSchool KidzLit® Grades 3–5 Package
AfterSchool KidzLit® Grades 6–8 Package
The grades K–5 program, for sites with younger children, comprises the K–3 and 3–5 packages. Each package is made up of 10-book sets on various themes.
