The AfterSchool KidzScience™ Video Clips provide strategies for how to lead the activities easily and effectively. Each video clip is under five minutes long and was made with the busy leader in mind. The video clips are designed to support leaders; they are not intended for the children to view. The video clips are not a substitute for the session guides. Leaders need to read the printed session guides to successfully lead the sessions. The videos don’t present every activity in the kit, but they are a fast and easy way to see and understand how to present key parts of the activities.
Every kit has one specific How-to video clip that typically highlights:
• What to expect in that kit’s sessions
• How to explain the main science learning goal
• How to prepare, use, or clean up the materials in selected activities
In addition to the How-to videos for each kit, there is an additional set of video clips called Leader Tips. These share valuable strategies for guiding and managing children in after-school science activities. They will help leaders with all of the AfterSchool KidzScience™ kits and are also helpful when leading other hands-on activities. For example, the Asking Questions video clip explains how different kinds of questions are useful for different situations and shows examples with leaders and children using the AfterSchool KidzScience™ kits.
Leaders might choose to watch these clips individually or together with other staff members as part of professional development. All of the video clips—the How-to videos and the Leader Tips videos—help after-school leaders quickly gain valuable techniques to engage children in hands-on activities.
