First Edition Materials

The first edition of Making Meaning is being used in more than 60,000 classrooms nationwide. With feedback from teachers using the program, DSC has revised and refreshed the program in grades K–6 to increase its impact on students. Here’s what’s new and what’s the same:

What's New

  • More nonfiction texts at each grade level: from 40% at kindergarten to 60% at the upper grades
  • Increased support for ELLs: in the front matter and in lesson notes to the teacher
  • Expanded support for IDR Teacher conference support: teachers take an active role
  • Optional Vocabulary supplement: includes engaging, interactive activities that teach high-utility words found in read-alouds
  • Revised units and sequence: improved flow with new nonfiction selections
  • Parent letters: unit letters in English and Spanish
  • Classroom facilitation support: regular inclusion of facilitation tips
