So far everything I have seen on lesson study appears to be at the elementary level. Have you worked with any schools or districts where Lesson Study was used at the secondary level? If so, what where the challenges you encountered? How did the learning differ from that of elementary teachers?
Thank you for any information and/or details you can provide.
I just recently completed a LS cycle with a team of secondary language arts teachers. The research theme was around student engagement. The focus of the lesson was narrative writing and the teachers designed a lesson using a read aloud to help students generate ideas for topics and to examine one author's approach to using sensory details and imagery in narrative writing. They also incorporated partner work and peer conferring. The data collected was powerful for the teachers and I believe will impact the way they teach writing going forward. These results are very similar to the results I've observed with elementary teachers.

So true, Sue. I think one of the most powerful parts of engaging in LS as a professional development opportunity is that is transcends grade levels and supports the research teacher teams where they currently are in their teaching, curriculum and planning.
