A Year in the Life of Writing Teachers: Forrest Elementary Implements the Being a Writer™ Program

We are excited to be able to share the experiences of first-time Being a Writer teachers at Forrest Elementary in Philadelphia, PA. They are in the first months of piloting the program and have agreed to write blogs telling us how their writing instruction is progressing this year.

The school was not happy with the state of their writing curriculum and, after a long search, had chosen the Being a Writer program as a replacement. Unfortunately, their funding fell through at the last minute, leaving them in the lurch. Having heard about the situation, we were pleased to be able to provide materials for all of their kindergarten through sixth grade teachers.

“It is wonderful to see them 'stress free' when I ask them to write for 20 to 30 minutes in silence. They also love listening to the picture books, and then generate their own ideas from it.“

—Karen Osmun, fifth grade

We invite you to read their first posts and ask them questions about their classrooms and how their writing instruction has already changed this year. We also invite you to continue to check back with them to see how writing instruction is progressing and how the teachers and students are experiencing the program.

BAW is just the curriculum

BAW is just the curriculum Forrest needed. Everyone is loving it and our administrators are thrilled as they are seeing rigor in every classroom. Using BAW affords our kids to soar to heights they never knew as writers. As I interact with students and faculty I think we have found the "key" to creating great writers! The kids are loving it and some are even refusing to go to lunch until the teacher reasd what they have written in their journal for the day. Imagine something being more important than eating to a 10-12 year old!

Thank you for sharing

Thank you for sharing Sharon!  I am so exciting about the transformation at your school!  I am so looking forward to hearing some of their stories. This is a wonderful journey you are sharing with the rest of us.
