Maurice Elias Makes the Case for Social Emotional Learning

We at DSC are passionately committed to the idea that if educators don't address the social and emotional needs of students, they compromise their ability to engender academic success. It's why we're here. It's why cooperative structures are braided into our literacy and math instruction, because it is our belief that academic and social learning flourish when they are integrated naturally. It's why we resist the idea that standardized tests alone point the way to better academic outcomes.

Maurice Elias makes the case for social emotional learning in this Edutopia video. He reminds us that providing a safe and caring context for learning has always been what the most effective teachers of children do. He asks us to remember those teachers who touched us and realize the best of them touched our hearts in order to reach our minds.
