Starting the Year in Chesapeake, VA - Updated
** I have attached the two presentations I used in Chesapeake. I thought I did it on my original post but clearly I did not. For those of you that asked - I thank you for reminding me.**
I returned Wednesday night from an inspiring visit to Chesapeake, VA. I was the keynote speaker at the district's summer Title I conference. Here is a shot of me in action.

One of the things I talked about that has lingered with me the past few days is this concept that as teachers we get a chance at the start of each school year to reinvent ourselves. There are not many jobs that can say this. Because of the nature of schools, we get new students with new stories that allow us to renew ourselves each and every school year. If we are coming off a difficult year everything begins new again. We can redesign the setup of our classrooms, change the colors of the bulletin boards, and create new daily schedules.
We can also reinvent our relationships. The new year gives us the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues (some of whom perhaps we never connected with in the past). We can try innovative ways to involve parents. We can also work hard to build a new classroom community with our students.
The new school year presents so many opportunities.

So every year, we get the opportunity to be better than we were the year before. And, every day we get to be better than we were the day before. I like it.
The reinvention part of
The reinvention part of teaching is the most exciting for me. I believe that my craft of teaching is ever changing and ever growing with each year, each interaction I have with colleagues and with each students I engage with. It is this excitement that grows my passion for teaching.
I love your perspective - I hope that all educators embrace this perspective as they embark on the 2010-2011 school year and imagine the possibilities it holds for all!
