A Little Bit About the Chicago Lesson Study Group

A Google search can be an overwhelming starting point for learning about lesson study! One resource I highly recommend, having been in that position myself, is the Chicago Lesson Study Group.

The Chicago Lesson Study Group was formed in 2002 under the guidance of lesson study scholar and proponent Akihiko Takahashi (DePaul University) “to explore the possibilities for replicating the success of Japanese lesson study in a U.S. setting” and to provide “a forum for teachers to learn about and practice lesson study as a way to steadily improve student learning.”

In support of its mission, CLSG hosts conferences, summer institutes, and other events where leaders in the field of U.S. lesson study share their knowledge and where educators have an opportunity to connect with other lesson study practitioners. (I was lucky enough to attend the 2010 Lesson Study Conference. See my earlier post about my experiences.) You can find out more at CLSG's events page. Some upcoming events of note:

Lesson Study Summer Institute 2010, Session 2 (high school focus)

August 11–13 and 16–17, 2010

2011 Tenth Chicago Lesson Study Conference ("Bringing the Common Core State Standards to Life through Lesson Study")

May 11–14, 2011

If you can’t attend a CLSG event, the website has an excellent resources page.
