In the past few weeks we have been helping teachers who are using Lesson Study to analyze their instruction with a focus on student learning.  Lesson Study is a powerful professional development activity but is relatively new to schools in the United States. For those of you want to know more about Lesson Study, this video provides a comprehensive overview of the process.

Hello, On the whole, I

Hello,

On the whole, I enjoyed the video, which was presented thoughtfully.

May I make two comments:

1. kyozaikenkyu, or studying intensively various resources, including various textbooks, research papers, curriculum frameworks, standards, all focused on student learning, seems to be missing from the cycle.

2. Might you change debrief to post-lesson discussion? In reflecting on the word debrief, we realized that it means to report back, whereas, after observing and collecting data, what we want to happen is an engaging, animated discussion and perhaps even debate on data collected on student learning, thinking, misunderstanding.

Re < not producing a perfect lesson the first time

There never will be a perfect lesson, as students will be different for future lessons, and one must consider these students' needs.

At Grand Avenue PLC, it is

At Grand Avenue PLC, it is critical that our students make accelerated gains.   Lesson Study has become an essential form of Professional Development for us because, as teachers of these students, it is essential that we also make accelerated gains regarding the effectiveness of our instruction to foster our students’ growth. Lesson Study has been the process that has cultivated such growth.

Through Lesson Study we have increased capacity as a whole by taking a deeper look at that which we are already teaching our students with the wonderful materials that we already have.

When implemented correctly, Lesson Study takes into consideration all viewpoints and experiences from each participant.  At Grand Avenue, Senior Interns and Veteran teachers have learned from one another. Existing professional relationships have strengthened dramatically. It has been a catalyst, triggering a paradigm shift in countless ways, but essentially regarding the manner in which we utilize our time with one another. We now spend quality time together as focused team members who engage in meaningful conversations about our students and reflecting on the means by which we present the content of a lesson.

I have yet to experience a process of Professional Development as significant and refreshing as Lesson Study.

this is an excellent way to

this is an excellent way to promote and assist a group of truly professional colleagues, and assisting districts to reach their goals of student and teacher success.
